Its true that the coil puts out less energy with the resistor but its not a lot less. Also if you have a points ignition it lengthens the life of the points greatly.

The resistor that some have mentioned earlier the ones you see mounted on firewalls and coil brackets are actually used to drop the voltage from the ignition circuit to the distributor.

A resistance type wire is connected from the ignition switch to the ignition coil in the primary circuit. It would work fine if you added a resistor but that is not what i purchased it for. Todd since you need a new coil i would suggest you buy the pertronix 15ohm coil part 40001 for chrome or 40011 for black and run without a ballast resistor.

The resistor limits the current going through the coil. This is providing you have the original ignitor. All that internalexternal coils refers to is that there needs to be resistance somewhere in that part of the circuit and it will be located either at the coil or at the alternator.

The resistance measured about 18 ohms. The purpose of the resistor is to limit the amount of current going to the points. This is a ballast.

With a 145 charging voltage it will draw about 8 amps. Cool worked fine but it requires a external resistor unlike how its advertised. Pete most coils need the resistor although thats not the case with every coil most do require it.

In other words if the alternator has an internal resistor then you would use an external resistor coil. No external resistor required. No external resistor required kind of implies that the resistor is built into the coil.
